Is a GHS musical your favorite thing? This fall GHS Theater will present “The Sound of Music: Youth Edition.”
The Sound of Music follows the story of Maria Rainer (Niava Friday), a spirited young woman, who lived in an abbey with nuns when she was sent away to be a governess for the Von Trapp family. When she arrives, she learns that the household is run like a military camp by the stern Von Trapp father (Sean Buckley), which causes his children to be unhappy and lonely. Through music, Maria shows the children what it’s like to have fun again, and shows the Captain what it’s like to love again.
The Sound of Music was originally a memoir written about the story of the Von Trapp family, and was later adapted into a musical and a movie.
GHS has brought in interim director Heidi Dallin for the all show. Not only is Dallin bringing a new directing style to GHS, but she is putting on a musical in the fall. Traditionally, GHS puts on a play in the fall, and a musical in the spring, but this year there will be two musicals.
“In the past few years, the musicals have all been very contemporary musicals,” Dallin said. “This is a classic and I really thought it would be a great idea for the actors at GHS to have experience in a classic.”
There is also a new music director, Wendy Betts. Betts has been a music director for many shows in the past. She is also the founder of the Cape Ann Symphony chorus.
The cast and crew includes students of all grade levels at GHS.
Many students both perform, and are a part of the crew, including sophomore Nathan Gorman-Melo, who plays “Rolph Gruber” is also the props co-coordinator.
“I’ve never done a show before where students contribute to the production team,” Gorman-Melo said. “It’s cool that I can bring a little bit of my own vision to the show through acting and props.”
The club will be rehearsing almost every day for the next month. With the amount of time the club has in the fall, it could be difficult to put on a musical. Drama club president Sean Buckley is excited to tackle the challenge.
“I continue to be surprised every day by how much we’re able to accomplish.” Buckley said.
