On a beautiful night in the Gloucester Fishermen’s Newell Stadium, the Salem Witches came out on top with a 1-0 win.
Two of four seniors were out for the game, leaving holes in the starting lineup.
The night was plagued by an aggressive playing style from both sides. Abigail Desmond left the game early in the second half due to back pain. Ava Borowick suffered a push from the back late in the game to secure a penalty kick that granted the Fishermen a scoring opportunity.
Rosie Telep, Betsy Telep, and Meadow Anderson played central mid, shutting down scoring opportunities and creating offensive plays.
“A lot of us younger players did a great job stepping up,” Rosie Telep said. “We showed a lot of improvement from the last time we played against Salem.”
Led by Hope Castellucci, the Gloucester defense put up a stubborn fight, not allowing a single goal in the first half and nearly shutting them out the second. Jude Friday was a vital part of the outcome of the game.
Jessica Harvey had an all-around amazing performance, including a save on a one-handed shot.
Despite the loss, the team cited their improvement from their first match against the Witches.
