On Saturday, the Gloucester Fishermen won their second consecutive game on a trip to Falmouth, 42-20.
The Falmouth Clippers, despite a loss to start the season, looked promising entering week two. Senior captain and starting quarterback TrèChaun Days has shown to be a potent threat both through the air and on the ground.
A seven-minute drive would see Gloucester score on a tough run by senior captain Joseph Allen. The Fishermen would punch in the extra point to take a quick 7-0 lead, but the Fishermen had more to give. Jaylen Severino pinned a Falmouth runner in their end before a botched pitch by Days led to a Falmouth fumble and a Gloucester recovery by Thomas Cribbs.
The Fishermen would quickly strike again behind another touchdown by Allen for his second of the day. The Fishermen failed to boot the extra point, but maintained a 13-0 lead.
However, Falmouth would not go quietly. While the Fishermen’s front seven would stuff any attempt at a designed run, Days strung together a series of successful drives. His first drive saw a gash through the center of the Fishermen’s defense to put Falmouth into Gloucester territory. He would finish the drive with a deep ball to receiver Malik Locke for Falmouth’s first touchdown of the day. The Clippers followed with an unsuccessful 2-point attempt.
After a Fishermen punt, Days took advantage of his arm and fired another ball down the field to Locke for a 64-yard touchdown off a tipped ball. A successful scramble by Days on the 2-point attempt would allow Falmouth to take a 14-13 lead.
Before the half, the Fishermen retook the lead on a touchdown from Jaylen Severino. Allen added to the lead with a 2-pointer to make the score 21-14.
Halftime adjustments allowed Falmouth to shift to a 5-front defense, but the Fishermen’s offense returned with much better blocking inside the box. Gloucester and Falmouth would trade blows, but Allen would score two more touchdowns on the ground in the third quarter. Falmouth scored once more off the arm of Days, but would find very little offensive success otherwise in the second half.
The Fishermen put the game away late in the fourth quarter behind an interception from junior linebacker Cole Mosley-Wynn. The turnover deep in Clippers territory would allow for a touchdown from junior running back Nash Marshall to put the nail in the coffin.
The Gloucester Fishermen return home for their next game on Friday, September 19th, against the St. Mary’s Spartans.
