On Friday, the new GHS girls volleyball team suffered a hard loss against Swampscott in the second game of the season.
The team started slow in the first two sets; the final set scores finished 5-25 and 6-25, respectively. Meghan Buckley got a kill from a set by Captain Jocelyn Maddalena. Libero Maddie Goodhue had impressive digs, and setter Kadijah Kaba showed incredible consistency, playing for the entire game.
In the third set, Gloucester improved, finishing the set 9-25. Defensive swing, Izzy Tarantino, played well after being put in an unfamiliar position in the front row.
The game highlight came from Captain Sara Fernandes. The outside hitter had an impressive chase down that kept the ball in play and was bumped over by Maddalena.
With the loss, their record moves to 0-2. Though the team is yet to win, they’re hopeful for improvement over the course of the season.
“We obviously have a lot of work to do. We’re going to really push this season to get these girls where they need to be,” Coach Jessica Coons said. Nevertheless, Coons offered an optimistic message, explaining how she “feels like the girls are really starting to put in the work.”

If you were hoping to be able to watch the Fisherman at a home game, there is the potential that home games will be held towards the end of the season if the team can obtain nets that are compliant with regulations.
“As soon as our nets are up to par with regulation,” Captain Maria Sierra said. “As soon as we can fundraise enough money, I definitely want to have home games.”
The fundraiser is through the Raise360 app. If you are interested in helping the team, donate here: https://www.raise-365.com/login/4371298/99e59e4c1bb5145554c899e74ffa783af9026e92
