When the lights are brightest, Abby Noble shines the most.
The freshman ace just had her 11th game with 10+ strikeouts — ironically, it was a game where she fanned 11 batters.
It wasn’t even her best strikeout performance — she struck out 15 in a nine-inning no-hitter thriller against Marblehead.
This time? It wasn’t close.
Her performance in Tuesday’s game came with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line — and Noble delivered without flinching.
“Throwing my second no-hitter of the year means everything,” Noble said in a post-game interview.
Over seven lights-out innings, Noble struck out 11, walked just three, and threw 107 pitches in total command. It was the latest gem in what’s been a jaw-dropping debut varsity campaign — one already worthy of NEC All-Conference honors, and now headlining Gloucester’s deepest tournament run since 2019 — the first since the introduction of the new MIAA tournament format.
From the jump, Gloucester made sure Noble had room to breathe. The bats exploded for four runs in the bottom of the first, as Kaiya Mineo, Olivia Madruga, Julia Carrancho and Mackayla Allen came out swinging. The Fishermen added another in the third, then blew the game open with a four-run fifth — powered by base hits from Madruga, Carrancho, Tasara Frontiero, and a two-run double smoked to the fence by Laila Ciaramitaro.
Head Coach Bryan Aiello has always told his team to open the floodgates early, but the Fishermen never truly did so before this matchup.
It was Gloucester’s most complete performance of the postseason — and possibly of the season — so far, combining power at the plate, pressure on the basepaths, and lockdown pitching.
The team swiped eight total bases — four of them from speedster Maddie Goodhue — and collected 12 hits on the day. Madruga and Carrancho both notched three-hit, two-RBI games, while Ciarmitaro added two hits of her own. Allen, Emma Carrapichosa and Aleena Brown each chipped in RBIs as the Fishermen piled it on.
“This was the second round of the state tournament, and back when my mom was in high school, her team lost to Bishop Fenwick in the first round,” Noble sa So, this felt personal. I’m proud we got the win and in a way, it feels like we won it for her too.”
Now 18-4, the Fishermen are peaking at exactly the right time. They’ll move on to face the No. 1 Dighton-Rehoboth Falcons in the Division 3 quarterfinals this Saturday.
Either way, one thing’s certain: with Abby Noble in the circle and a lineup firing on all cylinders, Gloucester’s not just here to compete — they’re here to contend.
