GHS is introducing a new wellness class for the 2025-2026 school year. The course is called the Wellness Coach Mentorship Program, and is designed for students who are interested in psychology, childcare, nursing, social work and other helping fields.
GHS Health teacher Rosa Goulart will be teaching the course. The first semester will cover “understanding child development, and understanding mental health and little kids,” Goulart said. “We will be certifying them in teen mental health first aid, as well as certifying them in CPR and first aid.”
Students will also learn about how experiences can impact small children and their young years of development. It will teach coping mechanisms for children who may suffer from anxiety, trauma and stress.
During the second semester, students will have the opportunity to participate in a paid internship. The sites that have been confirmed are Rockport Elementary School, East Veterans Elementary, Beeman Elementary and the YMCA.
If you are placed on one of these sites you will also earn honors credit. Students who really like this job can get hired to work in the summer program as well. Another benefit from this class is that you will also be granted a free YMCA membership.
Throughout the year professionals will come in for a speaker series and educate students on these topics.
The class would be great for “anyone who’s interested in going into a field that would be considered a helper field,” Goulart said. “Sometimes kids go off after they graduate, and they’re taking classes because they want to do something, and then they realize that they don’t like it. This is a great opportunity for them to actually try it out and see if, yeah, I think that this is the right fit for me post high school.”
“Students who are placed in an internship, will be responsible for their own transportation,” Goulart said. “However, we are working with CATA as well if someone does not have the ability to get themselves to the site.”
Interested students in the Wellness Coach Mentorship Program should contact Mrs. Goulart, or their guidance counselors.
