The Gloucester Varsity baseball team is a heavy favorite in the NEC this year. After working hard in the off-season, they have won 3 out of 4 scrimmages, and have a 2-0 record – defeating Salem on April 4th and Haverhill on April 7th.
The Fisherman beat Salem 6-1, with captain Giacomo Martell leading the way on the mound, pitching 6 ⅓ innings, having 6 strikeouts, and only allowing three hits. Offensively, the fishermen did well; Junior Lukas Albano, Sophomore Nico Alves, Senior Charlie Amero, Junior Captain Jaylen Severino, and Senior Matt Smith all recorded hits in the book against the Witches.
The fisherman’s tempo started slow, but got the ball rolling after the witches scored their only run of the night. When the Fishermen got back in the dugout, the energy shifted, when Smith and Alves recorded 2 RBIs against the Witches. The Fishermen ended the game strong defensively, held Salem to one run, and won their first game of the season.
The Fishermen then headed to Haverhill and kept the ball rolling, facing the 0-2 Hillies. Endicott commit Senior Captain Brayden Francis led the way for the Fishermen. He had a stellar game, throwing a no-hitter, with 8 strikeouts, and only allowing 1 walk, while pitching a complete game. Captain Severino sparked a surge in the 5th inning with a massive 2-RBI double. The Fisherman loaded the bases later in the game, scoring the rest of the runs, while the defense stayed strong for their pitcher. Great game defensively for Sophomore Trey Marrone, while also doing great at the plate with two hits.
The Fishermen take on the Danvers Falcons on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, at Twi Field, 55 Conant St, Danvers, MA.
