The boys basketball team won their second game of the season against the Saugus Sachems, 68 to 52 Tuesday night.
The Fishermen started off strong, finishing the first quarter with a 9 point lead.
Senior forward Charlie Amero found his groove, hitting a couple of mid range shots along with some highly contested layups early into the game. Paired with Guards Alex Laine and Nick Deleon’s impressive play, these key plays by senior leaders led the Fishermen to their victory.
Amero shined throughout the second quarter, breaking down the defense and finishing some tough layups. The Fishermen have strived for success after the opening loss to Swampscott, and have prided themselves on gaining toughness.
“Tough teams finish games on the road,” Coach Adam Philpott said, as his team positioned themselves to do just that going into the second half with a 17 point lead.
Saugus opened the second half playing faster and more aggressive, attempting to start a comeback campaign. Although the Fishermen struggled for a bit to keep up with the Sachems’s pressure, great plays from Deleon in the third quarter helped the Fishermen keep the game out of Sachem reach. Seniors Andrew Cribbs and Amero added a few blocks into the mix, and found themselves up by 15 after Deleon sunk a half court buzzer beater.
Amero and Deleon led the team in points, scoring 21 and 24, respectively.
“I thought they bounced back from a tough first game and showed how they can and will continue to play all season,” Laine said. “They take on a lot of responsibility being our most potent scorers on the team, but they are up for the challenge.”
The Fishermen are now an even 1-1 on the season, as they look to advance to 2-1 in their home opener against Masconomet Regional this Friday at 7pm.
