Last Friday, the varsity boys basketball team traveled to Swampscott, eager to play their debut game for the 24’-25’ season. The game resulted in a tough loss in their opening game against Swampscott, with a score of 41-69.
The Fishermen came out fast, with great defensive showings from guards Senior Alex Laine and Sophomore Carlos Velasquez. A pair of quick layups from Senior guard Nick Deleon gave the Fishermen momentum to hold a lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Swampscott looked to ramp up the intensity with big moves from Connor Chiarlo and Freshman Teddy O’Neil. O’Neil put on a show, hitting many threes and finishing the game as Swampscott’s leading scorer. The Fishermen were down 31-20 at the break.
“The mentality was that we were still confident in our ability to bring us back in the game, ” said Laine. “We wanted to come out strong and put together a good stretch of offense and defense.”
Laine led the team with 8 points, shooting an extraordinary high field goal percentage, specifically from the 3 point line. The Fishermen’s struggles mainly came from the rebound differential, paired with the hustle from Swampscott; the Fishermen couldn’t reel the game back in. The Fishermen’s low accuracy from the field played a big part in their loss as well.
The Fishermen look to get back on a winning record today at Saugus High School at 7pm.
