Field Hockey
Final Record: 9-9-1
Final Place: 23rd in D3 - Round of 32 loss to Bedford
Captains: Ivana Ferrara, Emma Carrapichosa, and Keagan Jewell
If the GHS Field Hockey team was told that they would finish with an even record and place 2nd in the NEC conference, they wouldn't believe it. But the unexpected outcome came true as their young roster rocketed them to finish 9-9-1 and multiple NEC awards.
The 2024 field hockey team had big shoes to fill; a 10-man senior class that started every game the previous year were gone and their spots were wide open. The only exception was goalie Keagan Jewell, who notched over 150 saves this season alone. The junior captain also reached the 35-game shutout mark, securing 9 this season alone. Her overall record in the net is 36-13-6.
The team featured a young core that lacked varsity experience and it took time before they got a hang of the game. Four freshmen were on the roster, with a usual rotation of three playing at once. The sophomore class featured five on the final roster, highlighted by outstanding performances from Olivia Madruga and Julia Palk.
The junior class dominated the roster, with a total of seven players making up the roster. Captain Ivana Ferrara was the only senior in the mix.
Despite their green, the Fishermen gained momentum throughout the season, notching wins against aggressive NEC opponents like Danvers and Swampscott. Despite losses in games against powerhouses like Masconomet and Malden Catholic, the team were in the games until the end and had chances to pull away with a win.
Madruga led the Fishermen in goals and points, finishing the season with 8 and 12 respectively. The sophomore ended with a 21st rank in the Gloucester Daily Times field hockey leaders.
Alongside her was forward Fiona Black, who ranked 25th with 10 total points (6 goals, 4 assists). Black was a surprise this season, as her debut varsity season was also her debut season as a field hockey player.
Other notable offensive players were Maddie Jewell (10 points), Mia Rodolosi (9 points), Palk (9 points), and Elliana Parsons (5 points). Emma Carrapichosa and Talia Harrington held down the defensive side alongside Jewell.
The hopeful season ended in the first round of playoffs, where the gritty and tender Fishermen met their match in Bedford. Despite two late game goals by Madruga and Parsons, it was too late for the team to prevail against the #10 ranked seed.
Madruga and K.Jewell were named to the NEC All-Conference team while defensemen Harrington and Carrapichosa were given NEC All-Star nods.
With the bulk of their roster returning next season, the now-vetted Fishermen will look to take the NEC title back to Gloucester and prove Gloucester's dominance remains.
Thank you to the following seniors for their dedication and commitment over the season: Ivana Ferrara
