A week of soccer resulted in a tie and loss for the Gloucester Girls Soccer team. The Fishermen tied the Swampscott Big Blue 1-1 and lost 8-0 to the St.Mary’s Spartans.
Swampscott controlled Gloucester’s zone for most of the first quarter, scoring their only goal midway through. Swampscott’s goal gave Gloucester a sense of urgency to tie the game.
At the end of the fourth quarter, Ava Paone passed the ball to Taiya Mano, who shot around the goalie. With five minutes left, neither team could take the lead.
Gloucester’s defense shut down many Swampscott attempts to score. Hope Castellucci, Mailee Lusk, and Skye Ciolino played exceptional games in the midfield. Goalie Jessica Harvey made 28 saves. Both teams were determ break the ongoing tie streak that they’ve sustained for 4 games in a row.
“I think we had great energy during the game. In the last five minutes, we really connected as a team to get the goal to tie the game,” Captain Taiya Mano said.
The Fishermen’s next game went less than ideal, losing 8-0 against a strong Spartan lineup. The game was tight throughout the first quarter, with both teams struggling to maintain possession. St. Mary’s jumped ahead with their first goal at the end of the first quarter. By the end of the first half, the Spartans led 3-0.
Despite the final 8-0 score, Gloucester worked well as a team. Skye Ciolino and Meadow Anderson played strong games at center-mid while Ava Paone and Taiya Mano played great at forward. Jessica Harvey made 29 saves.
Gloucester’s record drops to a 7-9-3 following the two games.
