Students who are interested in promoting inclusivity at Gloucester High School, are encouraged to join The Racial Equity and Advocacy Club.
The Racial Equity and Advocacy Club was started to highlight the under-represented people of Gloucester High School, and partake in activities targeted towards community equality. The club is in its third year at GHS, and is hoping to expand the program in the coming years.
“ The club was made to create advocacy for any equity whether that be racial, gender, economic inequality, or social justice problems,” club advisor and history teacher Alyssa D’Antonio said. “ The club is for those who are interested in advocacy and want to make a better place for everyone.”
Initially, Anti-Defamation League provided training to help students create a club advocating for those who are underrepresented in schools across America.
“The purpose is to try to change things at Gloucester High School for the better and make everyone feel included,” club president Lexi Thomas said. “All people are welcome to join.”
The group has participated in dialogue training with Essential Partners to help students navigate difficult conversations within their community. Last year, they created the “Photo Voices” project on display in the atrium, held a Juneteenth flag raising ceremony, and hosted a celebration for English Language Learners with cupcakes, food, music and crafts.
The group hopes to collaborate with O’Maley Middle School to spread their message of inclusivity and advocacy to younger generations, as well as partaking in activities in the community.
The club meets every other Monday in Ms. D’Antonio’s (room 2403), so come by and listen in!
