The Peabody Tanner Field Hockey team was clearly an underdog heading into their matchup with the Gloucester Fishermen. Peabody lost most of their starters, which has happened this season across the NEC. The Tanners haven’t had an ideal start to the season, losing to Gloucester and Beverly. They also tied with their other NEC opponent, the Danvers Falcons. While the Fishermen did prevail with a 2-0 win, the scrappy Tanners held up well. That has highlighted one of the Fishermen’s main problems to tackle; if you can score big against teams far below your skill level, you need to score against teams below and close to yours.
Elliana Parsons and Julia Palk scored for the Fishermen in the rainy day win as captain Keagan Jewell secured her fourth shutout of the season.
At the beginning of the season, the young Fishermen’s lineup struggled with taking an early jump to score. In their first four starts, Gloucester never scored in the first quarter. That changed against Bishop Fenwick when two out of their three goals were scored in the first.
In Friday’s game against Peabody, Parsons and Palk scored in the first quarter. Scoring was stalled after that, with both teams taking shots at the net.
While their first-quarter heroics worked out in the end, the group faced struggles throughout the game. The Fishermen were missing freshman standout Mia Rodolosi, who has been a large contributor to the Fishermen’s success.
The win has brought Gloucester past the .500 mark at 4-3. The Fishermen will travel on September 24th for a gritty battle against their longtime rival Danvers.
