Gloucester residents are no strangers to attending community events, especially ones meant to support a specific cause. On Wednesday, March 13th at 7:30 p.m., locals will have such an opportunity during Jazz For a Cure, a charity event taking place at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport. All proceeds will be going to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital.
The event was first introduced last year by sophomore Esme Sarrouf along with graduates Elijah Sarrouf and Tyler Wood. Their idea first stemmed from the teens’ experiences in Fitness For a Cure, an annual charity event created by Sarrouf’s aunt, which has raised 8 million dollars for the hospital.
This year, Esme has arranged a performance by the GHS jazz band and is currently awaiting responses from other schools regarding whether or not their bands are interested in performing as well.
“I think there’s something to be said about the way art and music can influence people and mental health. The hospital has put a lot of focus on bringing art to the kids and it helps them in so many ways,” Sarrouf said. “We don’t expect anyone to give more than they can or are comfortable with, but every penny counts.”
Although entry is free, any donations are appreciated and will be accepted at the door. Anybody interested in the event is highly encouraged to attend and show their support for both the local students as well as St. Judes.
