Last night, the GHS girls soccer team showcased their strength by defeating the Salem Witches in a 6-0 shutout, giving the Fishermen a powerful start to the season.
Gloucester secured the lead a few minutes into the 1st half when junior Taiya Mano dribbled down the field, and passed to junior Ava Paone, who slipped the ball through the Salem goalie’s hands. Maintaining this momentum was crucial in their victory and the Fishermen did not disappoint. With a strong midfield led by senior Abby Stauffer and junior Skye Ciolino, the ball was constantly in Salem’s half of the field, contributing to the 3-0 lead Gloucester had at the end of the half.
The Fishermen started off the 2nd half with yet another goal scored by Ava Paone after receiving a pass from Skye Ciolino, who then delivered the ball straight through Salem’s defense. In order to preserve their lead, the Fishermen’s defense, led by senior Morgan Pennimpede, hustled to prevent any breakaways.
Finally, after battling it out for the entirety of the game, the Fishermen sealed the deal with 2 more goals in the last 10 minutes, one of which was a corner kick executed by Abby Stauffer.
After a game well won, the Fishermen are planning to train even harder to work on “playing out wide and not being predictable,” Head Coach Katina Tibbets said. This team has shown that they are not a group to be messed with this season and they’re not going down without a fight.
The Fishermen will be heading to Danvers Monday at 6:30 for a showdown, where they will surely give the Falcons a run for their money.
