December 13, 2021
The GHS Boys Hockey team started off their season strong with a 6-4 win against the North Andover Knights on Saturday December 11 at the Dorothy Talbot Rink.
“The boys played great in the home opener, the team played amazing,” said junior Jack Delaney. “I loved the effort from all the boys and I feel very good about the season.”
Gloucester’s sophomore Emerson Marshall scored the opening goal, assisted by sophomore Colby Jewell in a power play. Delaney added to the Fishermen’s lead, and brought the game to 2-0 in the middle of the first period. North Andover’s Colin Howard scored making the game 2-1 Gloucester. Later in the period, Delaney assisted Marshall on another power play, which brought the score to 3-1. The Knights’ Kyle Donnley scored shortly after, and caused Gloucester’s lead to drop to 3-2.
At the beginning of the second period, Donnelly swept past the defense causing a tie of 3-3. Gloucester’s Jewell brought the lead back up to 4-3 after he scored right in front of the net.
Later in the second, Gloucester sophomore Brett Cunningham scored quickly off a face-off which brought their lead to 5-3, two minutes left in the second period.
At the beginning of the third period, Gloucester’s Jewell scored right between the goalie’s legs on a breakaway, which increased their lead to 6-3.
The Knights’ Andrew Perry scored later in the third to keep them in the game. After North Andover’s goalie was pulled, Gloucester’s defense ran the clock ending the game with a score of 6-4.
“I thought it was a solid first game for Gloucester,” Head Coach Derek Geary said. “ It’s nice to get a quality win out of the gates against a class program like North Andover. I thought both teams played extremely hard,” Geary said. “Our depth at the forward position might have been the difference. We need to work on our discipline when playing with a lead. Overall, we’re happy and on to the next game.”
Gloucester’s record is 1-0 and will travel to Salem State for their game against Marblehead on December 15, 2021.
