Boys soccer looks to continue their historic season in the State Tournament
The GHS boys soccer team is heading into playoffs after a very successful regular season, clinching the NEC South title and earning themselves the 8 seed in the MIAA 2021 Boys Soccer Division 3 State Championship.
Finishing with a record of 14-2-2, this year’s soccer team is looking to rewrite history as the GHS boys soccer team has never made it past the second round of playoffs.
Led by head coach Armando Marnoto, who was named the NEC Coach of the Year, Gloucester looks very strong this year as they have a mix of experienced upperclassmen and talented underclassmen. Gloucester had 5 All-Star selections this year but have multiple players who can get on the scoresheet.
Captains Andrew Coelho and Jack Patten were selected to the NEC All-Conference 1st team for their outstanding individual seasons. Coelho led the NEC in scoring with 26 goals and has the ability to score with both feet. Patten uses his athleticism and strength to show that he’s one of the best defenders in the conference, who can be matched up 1 on 1 with anybody.
Captain Max Sperry and captain Aidan Almeida were named to the NEC All-Star team along with junior Kayky Barbosa. Sperry has been a monster in net, with 9 shutouts this season. Almeida has been a key player on both sides of the ball as he is very experienced and versatile. Barbosa can play on either wing and uses his quick feet and agility to glide past defenders.
Earning a bye in the preliminary round, Gloucester will be facing East Boston, who defeated Pentucket in penalties on Thursday.
The round of 32 game of the state tournament will be held on Saturday at 5pm at Newell Stadium. Come support your Fisherman!
