During their senior night, the Gloucester Boys’ soccer team faced off against Malden in a close game. The Fishermen held off the Golden Tornadoes for the first half, but they let up the winning goal in the second to end the game in a 1-0 loss.
The game was characterized defensively, with Captain Henry Harrison and Finn Costa making many influential plays. They are both leaders on the field, controlling and organizing the team from the back.
“I think we had a great defensive game, and our offense showed much growth from the beginning of the year,” Harrison said. “Shane, who is usually the engine of our offense, did well in goal for the first time.”
Offensively, Captain Seamus Linehan led the charge. The junior contributed to plays and created scoring opportunities throughout the match. Without Widtfelt, Linehan had to generate most of the pressure on the Golden Tornadoes’ defense and executed a few breakaways. Raul Alejandro also played a key role on offense, helping the team transition throughout the field. Brendan Smith played hard in his varsity debut.
“The game pretty much summed up the season because the defense held strong and the offense made great improvement, but a single mistake lost us the game,” Costa said.
Before the game, Gloucester recognized seniors Zach Karcher, Erez Boraz, and Rafael Jabba.
The team plays Manchester-Essex for their season finale, where they look to snag their first win.
