No one expects a pitcher to be perfect in their season-opening campaign. Likewise, it’s rare for a freshman pitcher to put on a show in their first high school start, especially against one of the best rosters in the MIAA. But Abigail Noble did just that, striking out seven and allowing just 3 hits in the Fishermen’s 2-1 victory over St.Mary’s.

The Fishermen were behind for the better half of the frame after St.Mary’s took the lead in the first inning. Freshman Olivia Dissesa scored on a wild pitch after getting walked.

Gloucester’s offense struggled to find its rhythm until the 6th inning. With two outs, Emma Carrapichosa singled on a hard ground ball. She was replaced with courtesy runner Mia Rodolosi, who stole second. Sophomore Olivia Madruga tripled on a hard ground ball up the third base line, scoring Rodolosi to tie the game. Madruga scored on a Julia Carrancho single, bringing Gloucester into the lead.

Gloucester forced the Spartans into 3 ground-outs in the final inning to end the game. Sophomore Mackayla Allen had 3 total putouts during the match, saving runs on the grass line and making strong plays at shortstop.

The Boston Globe ranked the St.Mary’s Spartans 17th across all divisions in their pre-season poll. The Fishermen, now 1-0 to start the season, take on North Reading this Wednesday.
