Over winter break, the Gloucester Track and Field team hosted the NEC Freshman-Sophomore Invitational, which included ten NEC Conference teams.
The meet was very successful for the young Fisherman team, with strong performances by Grace Castellucci and Seamus Linehan. Castellucci placed first in the 300, ahead of teammate Meadow Anderson who placed fourth. Linehan finished second in the long jump and first in the 600 meter.
Linehan was accompanied in the 600 meter by his fellow Fisherman, Gerardo Di Stefano, who placed fifth.
Girls’ long jump was also successful for Gloucester, with sophomore Caitlin Dewan coming in fifth, and sophomore Madison Goodhue coming in fourth. Goodhue also participated in the 55-meter dash and placed fourth.
To close the individual events, Aleena Brown placed fifth in the shot put.
Not only did the Fishermens’ perform well in the individual events, but their team performance were also strong. Both 4×200 meter teams placed, with the girls in first and the boys in fifth.
The meet ended with multiple thrilling finishes, with the Castelluci’s victory in the girls’ 300-meter race decided by three-hundredths of a second. The girl’s 4×200 previously qualified for the MSTCA Freshman-Sophomore meet during the Sprint Invitational on Friday.
The boys 600 meters also had a hard fight for first. A Swampscott runner came up on Linehan’s shoulder in the deciding heat, pushing the sophomore to sprint as hard as possible.
Castellucci, Anderson, Goodhue, Dewan, Brown, and Linehan will compete in this Sunday’s MSTCA Freshman-Sophomore State Championship meet.
