Their first meeting went south. Freshman Mia Rodolosi opened the Fishermen’s first game against the Big Blue with a goal in the first quarter. Gloucester was running away with the win, controlling Swampscott in every aspect of the game. But it turned sour when Swampscott opened the 3rd quarter with a through-the-leg goal before scoring again off the rebound.
The Fishermen were plotting a revenge game with an aggressive scoring initiative. In the prior year, the Fishermen beat a more skilled Swampscott lineup in the second matchup of the year after dropping the initial matchup 2-1.
After their initial 2-1 loss against the Big Blue in the series opener, the Fishermen field hockey team doused the Big Blue 3-0. Eliana Parsons, Fiona Black, and Maddie Jewell scored off of assists from Mackayla Allen, Rodolosi, and Black.
The beginning of the game was back and forth, but Swampscott easily capitalized on Gloucester’s mistakes.
It wasn’t until the second quarter that Gloucester took control. Parsons collected a rebound off the goalie after Allen’s initial shot. The junior got low and took a wrist-shot around the Swampscott goalie to give Gloucester the lead.
Black struck next, taking a perfectly clean backhand shot through the Swampscott goalie’s legs. With the clock winding down, Jewell made a running snap drive up into the goalie before it dropped past the goal-line.
Gloucester would maintain a steady control of the game for the next quarter, albeit playing sloppily at times. Goalie Keagan Jewell faced 7 more shots than the opposing goalie Lilah Caplan, who had 10 saves on 13 shots. K.Jewell, on the other hand, saved all 20 shots she faced.
Despite the Big Blue becoming more aggressive and chippy towards the end, Gloucester managed to compete until the end. The Fishermen faced two penalty cards, however, both accredited to 5-yard penalties.
This marks the Fishermen’s ninth win of the season, raising their record to 9-8-1. K.Jewell also recorded her ninth shutout and her 150th save (she currently has 154).
The Fishermen now await their final power ranking spot and the tournament schedule. They were ranked 24th in Division 3 before Saturday’s win.
