Under the lights last Friday, Gloucester saw an instant classic in a nail-biting 34-33 win over Bishop Fenwick.
The Bishop Fenwick Crusaders is currently a team gunning for a top seed in D6. Coming off of a dominant 27-6 win over Bishop Stang, they were hungry for another win. Not only is the team stacked with talent, but it also has former local players on the roster — starters Tye Piraino and Odin Garron. The Crusaders also boast a strong backfield, lead by sophomore quarterback Andrew Kiricoples. Runningbacks Dylan Patturelli and Tyler Conelly are a tremendous help in the ground game.
The first half was full steam for the Gloucester Fishermen. They doubled down on the ground game, toying with alignment in an attempt to catch Bishop Fenwick off guard — and it worked. Jaylen Severino drew first blood on a cut-back run to put the Fishermen ahead early. Soon after a dominant defensive stop, the Fishermen would strike again on a double pass from Severino to Cameron Olsen that put them ahead 14-0.
Both teams would trade scores, including another from the legs of Severino, to make the score 20-8 before the half.
Although Bishop Fenwick fought well, closing the deficit by 19 points in the second half, the Fishermen would hold strong and keep the lead the entire second half.
Cole Mosley-Wynn had a momentum-shifting play in which he intercepted Andrew Kiricoples and made a skillful run for a Fishermen touchdown in the 3rd quarter.
Key penalties allowed the Crusaders to get the ball with under two minutes from the Fishermen’s 40 yard line and drive in for an Odin Garron receiving touchdown to make the score 34-33. The climax of the game came down to a 2 point conversion, where the Crusaders failed to take the lead on a reverse by Tyler Connelly.
Bishop Fenwick fought hard and gave the Fishermen a run for their money, but Gloucester holds onto their 4 game win streak and stay undefeated as they advance to their conference games.
For the third time this year, the Boston Herald would recognize a player from the Fishermen: Jaylen Severino. He covered over 140 yards on the ground and threw a 25 yard touchdown on a trick play. To make it sweeter, Severino had 3 all-purpose touchdowns on the day. To add to his heroics on offense, Severino also boomed multiple punts to put Fenwick in suboptimal positions downfield.
The Fishermen will take on their first North Eastern Conference opponent, the Salem Witches, at Bertram Field on Friday, October 3rd.
