It was an uphill battle for the GHS girls’ basketball team, which lost its home opener 26-49 to the Swampscott Big Blue.

The offensive game was carried by Jordan Perdue-DelTorchio and Captain Taiya Mano, who scored 11 and 7 points respectively. The game started slow on both sides, but Gloucester controlled the ball for a majority of the first quarter. Although the Fishermen only trailed by a small margin, the Big Blue controlled the game with their physical aggression.

While the Fishermen’s defense was strong, their offense proved shaky against a vigilant Swampscott group. Sophomores Natasha DePaula and Olivia Madruga performed strongly on the defensive end of the court, resulting in a number of turnovers in Gloucester’s favor.

Madruga exited the game midway through the first half due to a facial injury she received from an opposing defender. Freshman Adeline Amero performed adeptly in the sophomore’s absence until Madruga rejoined minutes later.

The game slipped out of the Fishermen’s grasp in the second half, despite their valiant defensive efforts.

Now slotted at a 0-1 record, the Fishermen await the arrival of the Saugus Sachems. The two NEC teams tip-off at 6 pm today in the Gloucester Field House.
