The Gloucester co-ed track and field team started their season off rough on Thursday night against NEC opponents Beverly and Marblehead. The girls team lost to Beverly 66-20 and Marblehead 60-26, with the boy’s side losing to Beverly 69-17 and Marblehead 75-11.
Gloucester had a few key athletes contribute to Thursday’s meet. On the girls’ side, Skye Ciolino won the 300 meters. Senior Lauren Sargent took second place in the shotput match and Hope Castellucci took second in the 1000 meters. Castellucci was only one second off of her record, running a 3.39.1.
On the boys’ side, Matthew Smith placed first in the shotput competition while sophomore Seamus Linehan took first in the 55-meter hurdles over the Beverly boys. Aidan Woods ran the 600 meters and got second against Marblehead and third against Beverly. Junior Jefferson Do Carmo also showed well, placing third overall in the 1000 meters.
The team looks to bounce back at the Northeast Conference Winter Invitational on Saturday at The TRACK at New Balance.
