Olivia Madruga - Field Hockey
What words and phrases come up when you hear the name Olivia Madruga? Do you think of her as a freak athlete, an example in the classroom, or a kind friend?
No matter the phrase you associate with the sophomore, her dominance on the field hockey turf this season is palpable.
Madruga notched a team-leading 12 points across the 19-game schedule. In her debut varsity season, the sophomore was a reliable force for the Fishermen on both sides of the ball.
"Not only is she a talented athlete, but she is also super dedicated to improving her performance every time she steps on the field," Head field hockey coach Lauren Riley-Gove said.
Madruga's accolades this season further prove her skill. Along with being named Gloucester's offensive player of the year, she was named to the NEC All-Conference team.
The sophomore scored her final goal of the season in Gloucester's 2-4 loss in the Round of 32. Throughout the season, 7 more shots hit the back of the net. She was credited with 4 assists.
The team counted on Madruga in all areas of the game, big or small, as her grit led to a high success rate when it came to scoring. She was an all-around player; penalty shots, drives, and top corner shots is her forteau.
While she is commended for her offensive gameplay, her defensive prowess is often overshadowed. The sophomore, despite often being double-teamed on offense, easily thwarted opponents in the midfield.
"Liv has been coming to camp forever and we have always had our eye on her," Riley-Gove continued. "It’s always great to see how different players turn out. I am looking forward to big things for our field hockey team and Olivia is a huge part of that!"
Not only does she control the hockey field, Madruga is ranked 5th in the class of 2025 with a 98.08 GPA. She is in one AP class and three honors classes, setting an example of an exemplary student-athlete.
Madruga is set to start on the Gloucester girls' basketball team this winter and return to the softball diamond this spring.
While there's still time before she hits the turf alongside her teammates, Gloucester can expect Madruga will make a large impact, if not more than last season, on the vetted roster.
