Keagan Jewell - Field Hockey
When you think of dominant 3-sport athletes in the junior class, Keagan Jewell immediately pops into your mind. She is known for her determination and work ethic both on and off the field. Her coaches and teammates agree that Jewell not only brings a competitive edge to their program, but also a sense of pride of being a Fisherman.
Currently, Jewell is a first-year captain for the young Fishermen field hockey squad. The goalkeeper is one of seven juniors on the varsity roster, along with one senior, 8 sophomores, and 5 freshmen.
Jewell has been a varsity starter since her freshman year and has the statistics to prove why. In her freshman campaign, Jewell had 13 total shutouts for a win-loss record of 14-1-3. She followed with 13 shutouts in her sophomore year, saving 73 shots with a 13-3-2 record.
Currently, the captains boasts 31 career shutouts and a career record of 33-10-5. Jewell has recorded five shutouts this season with over 90 saves.
One of Jewell's strengths in the net is her stick drives. The junior can push the ball an average of 20 yards one-handed from the goal line. She's also quick on her feet, diving to block a corner shot one second to being up for the next shot right after. Jewell is also very vocal, proving her immense knowledge of her team and the game of field hockey. It's clear why coaches Lauren Riley-Gove and Don Riley named her captain; it's hard to ignore this kind of talent when it shows up.
Jewell has fit into the role of captain with ease. Her teammates cite her determination to win and improve every chance she gets. Not only does Jewell lead the team as the captain and goalie, but she sets an example off the field. Jewell is a member of the junior student council and a stellar student. Her peers acknowledge her work ethic and sense of humor as her greatest qualities.
"I've looked up to her since I was in 8th grade," sophomore and backup goalie Aleena Brown said. "[You notice] how she carries herself on and off the field; it's like she's unstoppable. It sounds corny, but I admire her a lot. She's one of the reasons why I strive to improve [as a goalie]. She's an all-around beast."
