As winter sports begin, girls basketball is working towards a new season full of triumphs. With six seniors and a new plan of attack, the team is seeking a spot in the playoffs this year.

Led by captain Ruby Melvin, the varsity team looks to improve its record in order to make the playoffs. In order to do so, they need to win at least half their games.

“Of course just being overall successful is always a goal, but making playoffs is something we strive for every year. We’ve come up short the past couple seasons so it would be awesome to make the state tournament and also make a good run, if not win, the state title,” said senior Melvin.

After losing two leading scorers to graduation, both of whom were guards on last year’s varsity team, this year’s team is looking to utilize each players skill set in order to make up for the talent lost. With six seniors this year, and many new freshman, there is still lots of talent on the court.

While the team was offensively minded last year, this is truly the year for defense to win games.

“Each season you have to have a strategy for your team. This year our strength will be defense and rebounding. I’m looking forward to see each player improve along with the team,” said varsity coach Drew Muniz.

This year there is a varsity and junior varsity team. And junior varsity coach Allison Alves is excited to see what her new players can bring to the team.

“I am hoping for a successful and hard working JV team this season. I have a lot of new talent in the freshman and sophomore class so I am looking forward to that,” said coach Alves.

For the first matchup of the season, a scrimmage, the Fishermen will face Rockport, at home, on December 7th at 7:00 PM.

“Overall, I’m really excited for the season,” said Melvin.  “I think that we will have a solid team this year with a lot of enthusiasm and potential to be successful.
